Rabbits make wonderful pets!! But before you rush out a buy one at the nearest pet shop there are a number of things to consider.
On these pages we will provide some information that will help you make an informed choice about your newest family member!!
We have some basic questions and information that you should ask yourself on our Decisions to Make page. Probably the most important thing to remember is to do some research about rabbits before you buy. It is a good idea to go to several rabbitries or attend a show so you can get a good idea of all the different types of rabbits that are (or are not) available. Also ask lots of questions - a reputable breeder should be able to answer your questions and do so happily.
In 2010 WARCI introduced the WARCI Approved Breeder. These are experienced Breeders who will offer healthy pure bred bunnies and excellent information and follow up advice. Read about their service and responsibilities plus the Breeders Directory on the Approved Breeders page.
All members of the WARCI should follow our Code of Ethics. These relate to the keeping, breeding and sale of rabbits. The Code of Ethics should ensure that any rabbits bought from a WARCI member are healthy and well looked after.
There are a large number of breeds available in Western Australia. Unfortunately some breeds are not available here and some are not available in Australia. In our Photo Gallery we have photos of rabbits that are available here. If you browse through these pictures you will get an idea of the type of breeds that you like.
Rabbits are quite hardy but you do need to know how to look after them properly so that they remain healthy. We have some Basic Care Information on these pages as well as lots of more advanced husbandry information.
The West Australian Rabbit Council has produced their own excellent booklet that contains lots of useful information about keeping and caring for your bunny. It is written for Australian conditions and is aimed at new rabbit owners.
It can be purchased through this site at the webstore. It is a 50 pages booklet and costs $15. All profits go towards the WARCI Judges Fund.
You can also purchase this booklet by contacting WARCI directly or from our shows. If you purchase from a WARCI Approved Breeder they are obliged to include the booklet with the purchase of a bunny.
If you would like to exhibit your bunny at our shows, either as a pet or as a breed rabbit, read our section on Exhibiting your rabbit. We would love to see you there!!
